Let’s look back before looking forward

The purpose of companies running projects is to deliver changes to their operations in a controlled manner.

Why? Risks of adversely affecting the live operations is costly, highly embarrassing and demoralising.  But changes are needed for a multitude of reasons, including:

What is Stressful about Projects?

In our time of information being key, there is a growing trend of joyless urgency, which has spilled into our projects world where everyone needs to know exactly what is happening every day on their precious projects.  This is making every person across the project much busier than they need to be as the creation of information about the projects has far overtaken creating the actual change the project is to deliver.  In addition, with this increased level of visibility, everyone must be seen to be productive at the highest level every day, hour and minute. This is seen at every level relating to project delivery.

For 30 years I have been delivering, setting up, designing, mobilising, fixing, rescuing, closing out, and ensuring success in projects and 20 years doing the same for programmes. (Hopefully everyone knows the difference between projects and programmes but if not please see here Glossary.)

This has been across multiple industries with simple technology, complex technology and incredibly complex technology. With individuals, teams of all sorts of combinations of internal, external, hybrid, and many, many stakeholder mixtures.  The projects and programmes have ranged from £60k to £100m, from small, focused teams of less than 10 to over 200 people, and from a few months duration to 2+ years.  I never think I’ve seen and done it all, but 30 years with this variety builds up a significant wealth of experiences and solutions.
